This dataset and its supporting materials offer an alternative approach to conventional literary histories based on masculinist narratives of national formation or the evolution of dominant genres. Instead, it focuses its geo-temporal scope to both the literary and non-literary publications of a single year in three cities (London, Edinburgh, and Philadelphia) to trace the activities of women authors and printers at this moment. Working with the 2000+ ESTC (English Short Title Catalogue) records helped us produce a dataset organized around each city's literary and non-literary genre system, print environment, and "historical present" for the target year. This reorganization and annotation of the ESTC’s legacy data represents a project in “recovery and counter-representation” to resurface the contributions of women authors and printers to the publications of this year.
