The Institute of Classical Archaeology has been conducting archaeological fieldwork and study since 1974 within the ancient territory (chora) of Metaponto, located in the modern province of Basilicata on the southern Italian coast. This interdisciplinary work has covered a wide range of sites from the prehistoric to Medieval periods and has produced a wealth of new information about the daily life of rural populations in southern Italy. These discoveries are being published by the University of Texas Press in a multi-volume series titled The Chora of Metaponto.
