Origin of Historical Sources
| Dr. Emilio Mutis-Duplat was a geology professor at the University of Texas Permian Basin from 1974 to 2015. He supervised 10 Master’s students and their geologic quadrangle (1:24,000 scale) mapping projects in the western Llano Uplift within Mason and adjacent counties of central Texas. Dr. Mutis-Duplat continued to map about 13 quadrangles in this focus area and produced complete or partial detailed geologic field maps. There are an additional 23 quadrangles that he transcribed the geologic information (contacts and faults) from the coarse-scaled (1:250,000) Geologic Atlas of Texas (GAT; Barnes, 1981) onto the detailed (1:24,000) quadrangle maps. |
Documentation and Access to Sources
| Upon his passing, the estate of Dr. Mutis-Duplat sought to provide these unique unpublished maps and data to the public. The maps were loaned, organized, and scanned at the University of Texas at Austin, Bureau of Economic Geology in June of 2023. Original maps were returned to the estate with plans to donate to the Mason County Library or other local historical archives. The purpose of this document is to provide background in formation for these unpublished field maps so that they can be used and cited in the production of current and future geologic mapping or other earth science endeavors. |
