Description
—— Fr. Junípero Serra’s letter to Don Melchor de Peramás, Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli y Ursúa’s secretary, reporting on the arrival of the frigate San Antonio (or El Príncipe) and the provisions the viceroy has sent. He underscores the happiness of the region’s inhabitants in receiving increased food rations and salaries considering the hardships they have been experiencing. He mentions that Don Juan Soler, the storekeeper, is in good health and content but worries about his daughter in Mexico and hopes for assistance. He also notes that San Diego’s storekeeper, Don Rafael, has brought his wife, adding to the increasing number of Spanish families settling the area. Lastly, he discusses the inability of the frigate to continue the second leg of its voyage due to unfavorable winds. The captain exchanged seamen and acquired navigation instruments, leaving after three days with friars Juan Crespí and Tomás de la Peña on board. 2 f. (4 p.) (1774-06-14) |
