Investigación que remitió el fraile dominico Diego de Mendoza, ministro de doctrina de la Villa de Cuernavaca y Comisario del Santo Oficio, sobre el reniego de Dios, la virgen, los santos, y del santo sacramento que hizo Francisco Arias. Arias era un hombre “mulato” esclavizado que trabajaba en y escapo del ingenio del Capitán Martín García de Tovar. El administrador del ingenio, Jose Bueno, logro capturar a Arias y lo mando azotar. Por ver si lo dejaban de azotar, Arias renegó la fe, dando inició a la investigación inquisitorial. El documento contiene el nombramiento por Mendoza de Fray Juan Muñoz como notario especial; el relato y informe inicial de Fray Juan de Trujillo sobre el reniego de Arias; la confesión de Arias; y el testimonio de tres testigos, Juan Rodríguez (un cañaberero español), Mateo Bueno (un herrero español), y Roque de la Cruz (un hombre esclavizado). —— Investigation submitted by the Dominican friar Diego de Mendoza, doctrinal minister of Cuernavaca and Commissioner of the Holy Office, on Francisco Arias' renunciation of God, the Virgin, the saints, and the Holy Sacrament. Arias was an enslaved “mulatto” man who worked at and escaped the sugar mill of Captain Martín García de Tovar. The mill administrator, Jose Bueno, managed to capture Arias and had him flogged. To see if they would stop whipping him, Arias renounced his faith, a proclamation that initiated the Inquisitorial investigation. The document contains Mendoza's appointment of Fray Juan Muñoz as special notary for the case; Fray Juan de Trujillo's account and initial report of Arias' renunciation of the Catholic faith; Arias' confession; and the testimony of three witnesses, Juan Rodríguez (a Spanish cane harvester), Mateo Bueno (a Spanish blacksmith), and Roque de la Cruz (an enslaved man). 14 f. Eduardo H. Gorobets Martins and Albert A. Palacios corrected, finalized, and exported the FromThePage transcriptions on 2023 May 25. Albert A. Palacios used ChatGPT to automatically correct the misspellings in the raw OCR text and re-inputted the corrected transcription into ChatGPT to correct/modernize the grammar and generate an English translation. Palacios manually reviewed and edited the automatic translation using the original text on 2024 January 25. The description in this metadata record was also generated using ChatGPT and Palacios edited for accuracy. Item is in box 1, folder 4 of the Black Diaspora Archive Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection, Benson Latin American Collection, LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections, The University of Texas at Austin.
